Who we are

Several years ago, citizen volunteers formed the Friends of Sydney Park.  These folks worked with city officials to develop a park plan that met the needs of the community and implemented the Phase 1 changes you see today.  These changes included the planting beds at the north and south ends, new benches to replace the broken ones, and the trash receptacles to reclaim a public space that had decayed through neglect and abuse.  The overall goal of the group relied on native species, natural elements, and sustainability to maximize the ecological and positive environmental impacts of this little green space in the lower Fan, at the intersection of Floyd, N Morris, and N Brunswick.

Ongoing Annual Spring/Fall CleanUP events deploy as many volunteers as possible to neighborhood parks to supplement seasonal maintenance activities completed by the City.  The end result generates pride in our neighborhood parks as a valuable resource and treasured green space and, even more importantly, a broader use of neighborhood parks as a public community asset.

As an authorized partner of the Enrichmond Foundation, Friends of Sydney Park can process charitable donations that are deductible in compliance with IRS regulations.   We  can even accept credit card donations at Donate to the Friends of Sydney Park through their secure server - to keep up with maintenance efforts and potentially fund Phase Two Redevelopment. Join our efforts today!

We Need YOUR Ideas and Suggestions!

Do you have an idea or two or three or more? Sydney Park has become a gathering spot, integral to our urban fabric, filled with laughter, lawn games, and even music at times. Sixteen years have passed since Phase One, the Fan District has continued to evolve, and, now, it's time to revisit Sydney Park to determine what additional amenities park users need at that location. The Friends of Sydney Park want to hear from you!

As park stewards for Sydney Park, the organization is in the planning stages for Phase Two improvements and enhancements. Send your ideas and suggestions, like more seating, bike racks, more trees, additional seasonal color, etc. to info@sydneypark.org! Let us hear from you today!

Volunteers for the Spring CleanUP 2014

A team of hardworking volunteers joined the Friends of Sydney Park co-chairs to weed the beds, trim the plantings, and spread mulch provided by the City of Richmond. 18 liriope were planted around a crape myrtle at the south end of the park. Thanks to all who came out, volunteered, and spent their Saturday morning making the Fan a better place to live! Kudos to the Fan District Association for organizing the volunteerism. Kudos to VCU’s PTTG (Paint The Town Green) initiative. Take a peek at our very fine group: Roger Whitfield, Mike Rohde, Ronnie Zeberlein, Pat Daniels, Laura Bateman, Britt Curry, Amber Channell, Jake Sklar, and Madison Barber. Thanks all!

Fall CleanUP 2013

Saturday October 19, 2013 is the date! We start at 9 AM!

Set aside a few hours and come to Sydney Park !  A coordinator will assign tasks to volunteers in priority order.  Wear sturdy shoes; bring gloves, garden tools, rakes, shovels, pruners, wheel barrows, spades, brooms, any implements at your disposal to make the job easier.  We’ll be weeding, mulching, picking up trash/litter (especially all those cigarette butts!), raking, planting some liriope and an assortment of tasks.  Volunteer alongside your neighbors and friends to build a strong sense of community, relish in the Fall air, and play in the dirt.  We’ll be taking before, during, and after photos for publication in Fanfare and on the FDA website – so wear your brightest smile!

Fall CleanUP 2012

Report to the park at 9:00 AM, wear sturdy shoes, bring any garden tools to which you have access and be prepared to weed the beds, mulch, plant and spiff up the park for Fall.
